LAURA BENSMAN, WORDIE

Within the first week of working in Discover’s internal creative department, I knew that Angela Liddy was the leading graphic design force behind all its brand communication. And I knew I wanted to be her messaging partner. She is — quite simply — remarkable.

Over the years, we worked together on everything from new product launches to brand identity systems to shopper marketing initiatives, Angela gently led her graphic design teams to always push for more, while staying true to the brand. Hers is a precise eye that considers all possibilities, before zeroing in on the right visual identity to effectively connect the marketing with its intended target. Her designs are fresh, clean and clear, and lead consumers to the CTA.

Angela is a natural mentor and thought leader. That’s just part of her DNA. She works across departments to find solutions with no drama. She is resilient and has an emotional intelligence that is off the charts. I think the only negative I can think of is that Angela likes to start work super early, maybe around 7 or 7:30 am. And I think that is probably the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen a creative do. But, we should probably let that one go.

Angela is an inspiration. I’ve had the honor of working with her at two different companies in multiple roles over the years. Her design aesthetic is unequaled. As part of the in-house creative team at Discover, her designs stand-alone and have been both the rival of, and leading inspiration for major external agency work. Her skills, from concept to execution, have been expertly honed and consistently result in brand differentiating designs that work across channels.

Her methodology is rock solid, creative solutions refreshing, and her hawk-eye art direction sees the big picture while catching every nuance. She is business-minded while being customer-centric. Most notably, she is a calming force within high-pressure creative challenges and personalities. I recommend and have great respect Angela— she is an incredibly talented, creative professional who cares a great deal about her work and the people she works with.

Angela is a truly unique designer. Due to her incredible design talents, and her ability to apply her skills to many different platforms, she was selected to lead the design work for many important initiatives at Discover Financial Services. This included the launch of the Discover IT® card (the flagship credit card including the plastic card and all the consumer facing materials), creation and development of the Discover Brand visual manifestation across the enterprise (B2C, B2B, and employee facing), development and deployment of the visual heart of the CX/UX, and international work on Brand development with Diners Club International. She was a successful Senior level design lead at Discover Financial Services from February 2000 - August 2018. She is a strong problem solver, integrating her unique creative talents in both print and digital environments. She is comfortable in large creative organizations as well as smaller shops.

During her time with Discover, the organization went through a workflow transformation to Agile; focused on a deeper customer understanding, additional transparency across corporate priorities, and greater value-added work. Angela participated in this transformation to Agile, and is very comfortable with continuous improvement, including streamlining workflow while maintaining high quality output. She has a strong work ethic, collaborates well internally as well as with external resources and would be a great addition to any design team.
